@bonniedoes: Mind you, a dog running loose in a store last week had a 🔫 pulled on them by a senile old man…. Assume everyone around you doesn’t know how to interact with dogs and KEEP THEM CLOSE. #servicedog
when I was a barista, there was a man who came in with his "service dog". The dog had the vest on, but he roamed around the store. Me and my coworkers even had to corral him from behind the bar during a rush.

The only time my dog is off leash is from my house to the car. I may drop her leash by accident or when I pass out so that’s why we have a waist attachment system that’s hands free. She needs to be not in a tight heel due to me passing out but that’s it, we try to handle as normal as possible.

I always find it interesting that their dogs need to be off leash all the time. but they can train up their SDITs on leash. they often go on to try to train other people's dogs and have them on leash. but somehow it's a danger or they physically can't hold a leash once their dog has some training.

there's something to be said for practicing a long distance down stay in a pet friendly store (most lowes and home Depots are) because that actually can come up sometimes while working your service dog, but I'd personally only ever practice those skills when my dog was vested (and leash wraps and collars exist too for dogs who work better without a vest or who need to practice being able to work without a vest just in case!) and for practicing the metal stairs (with permission from the store!!!) because it's good to expose them to walking on surfaces they might otherwise not want to walk on.
but I'm not a fan of some of the off leash tasks people train because they can be dangerous for the dog. I had asked my service dog's trainer about teaching mine to get help but she told me that if my dog isn't with me she's no longer under my control and also someone could hurt her or take her and she suggested teaching my dog to bark or hit a button to call someone instead if needed. another definite we are tasks that require being off leash and I am in full support of them I just also think some of the ones I see people talk about on social media a lot are not always the safest option for the dog and often a alternative exist.

I agree I use a two inch 1/2 leash with a traffic leash but I am put a extra leash that is a retractable leash on the harness

If the dog is climbing the display, it is a service dog, and if it is it can still be asked to leave for poor behavior
