@founder.talk.podcasts: There's no legal requirement to give someone a verbal warning before defending yourself against a break-in. But here's the part everyone misses. Criminal law and civil law are two completely different games. Matthew Gerard, founder of Down Range CC, broke this down in a way that stuck with me. Even if you were 100% justified you're probably getting sued civilly anyway. It becomes a what-if game in front of a jury regardless of what actually happened. His advice is simple. Self-defense insurance is worth its weight in gold. Not because you did something wrong. Because you did something RIGHT and someone will still try to make you pay for it. I think about this same principle as a founder. You can run your business perfectly and still get sued. Liability coverage, contracts, insurance. All of it exists for the moment you were completely right and it still costs money to prove it. Protect yourself BEFORE you need to. Not after.
