K everyone saying the endings should have swapped....rewatch the series please. Dean already had everything he wanted for Sam, he chose to give it up long ago. Dean deserved peace. Sam still had to clean the world up after deans death. Dean had gone through hell, purgatory, archangel possession, and lived a full life or hundreds. Sam went through all of that in micro amounts. Sam deserved love, a wife, a life that wasn't fully about hunting. Dean deserved rest and peace. Don't forget, Sam had taken breaks from hunting, dean never did. Even in his calm year, he was still hunting on the side of being wary. Dean has ALWAYS carried the weight. His death could have been better, but the ending itself is exactly as it should be.

I always thought it was better left ambiguous. the story is Sams story. if he left hunting and married some random cashier at the Food lion so be it. he had always originally wanted a normal life away from hunting.
