I hate small plates. I want a Yorkshire pudding the size of a steering wheel and enough gravy to drown a toddler

I’m so borrrrrred of Perth food. Burrata, Krudo, Olives, achovies on toast, a dry parfait, $6.50 oysters, Korean fried chicken bites, 2 tacos to share $24. 😭

Great take! I’m starting to much prefer spending my money at local hole in the wall places who cook the foods of their culture and childhood. Of course they are much less consistent but there’s something so genuine about eating food that has been enjoyed by people for centuries. It seems some fine dining chefs in Melb are also turning to this and opening suburban eateries that just focus on homestyle or street food dishes they love. I find it very rare to find a “small plates” semi-upscale restaurant I want to keep returning to. A lot of them will have delicious “small plates” or appetisers but once you get to the mains/meats they are boring and not even cooked well. The service often feels very forced as well with sneaky ways of getting you to spend more and then asking for a tip at the end 😐 obv not the waitstaff fault, they’ve clearly been given scripts to follow and quotas to meet by corporate

I hate small plates. I want a big plate with some protein, some sort of carbohydrate, a vegetable, and some sauce, that the chef has carefully chosen because they all taste good together.

I fuck with small plates but I am not rich enough to live this life. Low-key though I think there are heaps of places that aren’t owned by big ass companies who make interesting food in a small plate format. Don’t slag on them. NPCs on TikTok just aren’t rly going there as much.
