This is why we always milk share on some level. Life is too unpredictable & if I can't milk for a day, a week, a season, the lambs or calves will swap in with no hesitation. I learned this when I got pneumonia one year & could barely stumble/ crawl to the bathroom, definitely couldn't leave the house for weeks.

besides that, mastitis is a HUGE loss if you rely on selling milk. You cannot sell infected milk and if I remember correctly, depending on the antibiotics you need to wait 7-14 days to go back to selling the milk. I only know about cows on Brazil cause that's what I've learned but if you're selling and your cow produces 15 liters per day, you're looking 14 to 28 days of loss there. Plus if you don't treat you can literally lose the cow.

your explanation kind of makes sense. except that when I have goats that only have one baby they won't let them drink from one side I assume it's to protect that side from infection. however sometimes the protected side does get mastitis. how?

So it's possible we started milking our animals before we started consuming the dairy if milking is a part of care when they are in lactation.
