The kulintang plays the melody and is composed of 8 small graduated brass gongs laid into a wooden frame. The gongs are played with lightweight wooden beaters for fast, complicated pieces. The kulintang is called the kolintang by the Maranao people and the kulintangan by the Tausug people.
