Behind a lion’s retina is a specialized reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum. Instead of allowing incoming light to pass through the eye only once, this layer reflects some of that light back through the retina. This gives the light-sensitive cells in the retina another opportunity to detect photons, improving the lion’s ability to see when light levels are low. It is one of several adaptations that make lions effective predators during periods of reduced visibility. But there is an important detail: the tapetum lucidum does not produce light. The apparent “glow” happens because available light—such as moonlight or artificial light—is reflected back toward the observer. This same structure is found in many nocturnal or low-light-adapted animals, although the color and intensity of their eye-shine can vary depending on the animal and the way light enters the eye. So when a lion’s eyes seem to glow at night, you are not seeing the lion producing light.
