@unbox_factory: America Is Putting Missile Killers in Space — The $3.2 Billion “Golden Dome” Program Could Intercept Missiles From Orbit The United States is moving forward with one of the most ambitious missile-defense concepts ever attempted: space-based interceptors that could attack enemy missiles from orbit. As part of President Trump's Golden Dome missile-defense architecture, the U.S. Space Force awarded 20 prototype agreements to 12 companies with a combined potential value of up to $3.2 billion. The program is intended to develop a proliferated low-Earth-orbit constellation capable of engaging missiles during their boost, midcourse and glide phases. The important catch: these orbital “missile killers” do not exist operationally yet. The $3.2 billion covers early development and prototype work, with the Space Force targeting a demonstration of the capability by 2028. Companies involved include SpaceX, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Anduril and others. The space-based layer is only one component of the much larger Golden Dome system, which would combine orbital sensors and interceptors with ground-based missile defenses. If it works, the concept could fundamentally change missile defense—but it also faces enormous technical, cost and strategic challenges, including maintaining a large orbital constellation and avoiding an escalation of the space arms race.
