Beta Tips Ep. 1 Hi! In this new series, which I’ll upload every Wednesday, I’ll share tips and tricks I use in the mountains, whether it’s knots, rope techniques, or gear. Today’s episode is about the gear I carry for ski mountaineering, especially when skiing on a glacier. The basic gear every skier should carry includes a LVS device, probe, shovel, and first aid kit in case of an avalanche. Then, for glacier travel, you also need the gear necessary to rescue yourself or someone else from a crevasse. The basic kit includes a harness, Micro Traxion, Tibloc, 60 cm and 120 cm slings, an ice screw and a threader (TIP: you can store the threader inside the ice screw), HMS carabiners, 3 m and 5 m accessory cord, a rope suited for glacier travel, and a Triact carabiner for attaching yourself to the rope. If there is a section where you need to climb with the skis on your backpack, it is important to carry crampons for the ski boots, an ice axe, and always a helmet! In some cases, ski crampons are also useful, especially when skiing in spring or early in the day, when the snow may be hard. ⛷️ Besides this, it is also important to bring the appropriate layering system, as well as enough food and water for the planned trip.
