@sammie_sprouts: The hardest part about explaining a dysfunctional childhood is that every example can seem so small all by itself. #growthmindset #HealingJourney #boundariesmatter #toxicfamily #narcissisticabuse
my aunt n mom used to ALWAYS perceive me, i have so much shame and social anxiety today. when i was walking by at around 7-13 they used to say ish like „oh look at her butt, look at how shes feeling herself“ and it was just me wearing black leggings….

Yeah, like my mom always tell me she and other fam(my uncle/nieces & cousins) are going somewhere and ask me if I wanna come. Then she tell me to just stay at home cos I don't like going out anyway. Like, I don't like going out alone, but with families? I'm all for it. Why bother asking if ur leaving me alone at home anyway...

I had a meltdown one Xmas in HS when every single gift for me I couldn’t use. Body wash I’m allergic to, clothes that didn’t fit, candy my sister likes and I don’t. I was called spoiled and entitled.

And when you start rambling off a list you sound psycho. What's missing is the tone, the vibe, the energy, the favouritism, the side comments/jokes, the looks, the silent expectations, the comparisons, walking on egg shells, overhearing horrible things about you, and so much more.

When I wanted an orange kitchen aid and my mom got me blue because I would grow out of orange. Favorite color since I was 14. I’m 32.

I barely remember my childhood and it only comes back in little fragments when a current situation triggers the memory. I only remember a few big events from my childhood and some abusive patterns but I can't remember the specific date or little details so explaining it to someone who has never been through abuse is exhausting

it wasn‘t this one big bad moment but the lack of good moments… I mean sure, we went to a big amusement park where I got yelled at the entire time. We went to the cinema only to tell me how much they hated that movie and how stupid I was because I liked it. We listened to music together and every song I showed them was „the worst song ever“. They let me go horse riding just to tell me how fat my ass looked there…. Every little thing I did or liked was bad or not good enough

Oh totally can relate to this, especially when they (who is toxic to me) appear as a good person to others🥺 it makes me feel like I am only over thinking

one time my mother got me a gift and gave it to me in front of visitors. It was 2XL jacket. It could fit 2 of me inside and she still said "try it on, I wasn't sure if it will fit you"

Tons of tiny examples so now I have to say the few huge ones and people can understand a little bit but while they sound huge to others this was the norm… they all mattered to me the same amount!!! One of my big examples is when my parents decided I was bad on Christmas so Christmas Eve they took me to their room and showed me all my presents unwrapped… then said I didn’t deserve them and they would be returning them day after Christmas but they wanted to make sure I got to see what I missed…

Not being able to dress how I wanted, when it was age appropriate and within my parents modesty standards, doesn't make sense to non abused kids turned adults.

one thing ive learned in life is to never tell acquaintances and friends about family problems bc they dont really give a shit. you could tell them that you got beat up and yelled at daily and theyd be like “that’s crazy” and go on with their day.

telling the kids at school "my parents aren't poor, but I am" because if mom wanted a coach purse, a new pair of shoes, a fresh nail set, she'd just go out & get it. but if I wanted anything it was always "we can't afford that"/"it's too much money"

Neglect & abuse by 1000 cuts. That’s why they call it gaslighting & dog whistles. Because it’s not obvious, it’s intended for the target only. It was every day in every way as soon as you let your guard down, BAM!

You are talking about how difficult it is to explain that something was toxic and why you think so. ❤️People who have never experienced that will have trouble comprehending.

I’ve been allergic to pineapple, raspberry and kiwi my entire life. When I was a kid my Grandma ordered me a raspberry cake for my birthday because she likes the flavor. I had to hold back tears when I found out, but I couldn’t even eat my own birthday cake while my friends were all able to have a slice. I was called spoiled.
