@ozbekmarxist: The Jadids were early 20th-century Muslim reformers in the Russian Empire and Central Asia who fought to modernize their society through the "new method" of education. To counter colonial rule and internal stagnation, they built modern schools teaching secular sciences, founded the region's first newspapers, created national theater, and championed women's rights. They faced heavy opposition from both Russian authorities and conservative religious elites. After the 1917 Revolution, they briefly attempted to build an autonomous state, and later worked within the early Soviet system to advance national education and culture. Tragically, during Stalin's Great Terror of 1937–1938, almost the entire Jadid intellectual elite was executed under false charges of nationalism. Despite their tragic elimination, they successfully laid the cultural, linguistic, and educational foundations for modern Central Asian nations like Uzbekistan.
