Here are a few of the most interesting and telling facts about these "Kings of Metal." 🎸 The Birth of Warriors and "True Metal" The band was founded in 1980 in New York by bassist Joey DeMaio and guitarist Ross "The Boss" Friedman (they met when DeMaio was working as a technician for Black Sabbath). From the very beginning, Manowar declared war on "false metal" and made their trademark the image of warriors, themes of Norse mythology, swords, and battles. 📜 A Contract Signed in Blood In 1983, to prove the seriousness of their intentions, the musicians signed their first major contract in their own blood. This became one of the most famous (and chilling) facts in the history of rock music. 🔊 The Loudest in the World (and That's Official) Manowar have repeatedly entered the Guinness Book of Records as the "loudest concert band." · 1984: At a concert in Hanover (Germany), the volume reached 129.5 dB. For comparison: that's louder than the sound of a Boeing taking off (130 dB). · 2008: At the soundcheck for the Magic Circle festival, they reportedly hit 139 dB. · Their technical rider even specifies a minimum sound level that the equipment must produce: 126 dB. ⏱️ The Marathon Concert In 2008, at a festival in Bulgaria, Manowar played the longest heavy metal concert in history, lasting 5 hours and 1 minute. During that time, they performed more than 40 songs. 👑 Friendship with a Hollywood Legend For their debut album Battle Hymns (1982), they invited Orson Welles — the legendary director and actor ("Citizen Kane") — to record narration. Welles, known for his powerful voice, agreed, and Manowar became the only band in history to record a song with Orson Welles. 💪 By Their Own Hands and in 18 Languages The band has always strived for perfect sound. When standard equipment no longer satisfied them, they began designing their own guitar cabinets and even guitars. And in 2009, they released the ballad "Father," recording it in 18 different languages at once, which became a record for metal. Manowar are a paradox of a band. People often mocked their pomp and leather armor, but their influence on power metal and epic metal cannot be overstated.
