Sometimes the safest way to create a balayage… is to never lighten the client’s hair at all. 🤯 When this client first came to me about a year ago, her hair was extremely compromised. We had to cut off a significant amount of damage and use extensions to give her length and density while her natural hair recovered. Fast forward to now: she wanted that seamless, dimensional balayage + peekaboo effect. The problem? Her natural hair is VERY dark—and putting lightener anywhere near it was absolutely off the table. So instead of chemically creating the dimension, I built the entire color story with extensions. Here’s the mapping 👇🏼 ✨ ROW 1 — THE VEIL A teardrop coverage row using a 24” OG Espresso — 85g of dark hair strategically placed over everything underneath. This dark veil is crucial. When your client has a dark natural base, you can’t just throw blonde extensions underneath and expect them to blend. Espresso needed to be distributed throughout the entire install to create continuity between her natural hair and the dimensional pieces below. ✨ ROW 2 — CUSTOM DL A custom Double Layer weft with Caramel Blonde on top + Espresso underneath. Because we didn’t want the dimension to be completely hidden, we intentionally placed the blonde side on top and the dark side underneath. This creates a sandwich effect that allows the colors to blend while still letting the blonde dimension show through. It’s also important to have her base color distributed between all of the rows. That darker shade helps connect the extensions to her natural hair and keeps the overall result seamless. If she had wanted a more subtle look with the balayage concentrated only toward the bottom, I would have flipped this row so the dark side was on top. That would allow the darker base to cover more of the dimension and create a softer, more hidden effect. ✨ ROW 3 — CUSTOM DL Another custom Double Layer with Rich Chocolate on one side + Rooted Caramel on the other. For this row, we also wanted to subtly shift the overall darker tone from Espresso to a slightly lighter brown. Moving into Rich Chocolate helped mirror the way a natural balayage gradually becomes lighter toward the ends, while still maintaining enough depth to create dimension and keep the result looking rich and seamless. I toned the dimensional pieces with 7NCH + 7NW + 7NB to create that expensive, melted warmth we wanted. Then I took two mini pieces from the DL and placed one on each side of her fringe near the teardrop to bring that dimension around her face—always keeping the darker side facing upward so it disappears into her natural hair instead of creating an obvious color break. The result? Over 200 grams of 24” dimensional hair with absolutely ZERO lightener on her natural hair. Subtle enough to look believable. Striking enough to completely transform her. And she can still throw the entire thing into a high ponytail without a track in sight. THIS is why extension work is so much more than installing hair. It’s color theory. It’s mapping. It’s weight distribution. It’s customization. It’s knowing exactly where every shade needs to live so the eye never sees where her natural hair ends and the extensions begin. When the natural hair can’t safely give you the color you want… build the color with the extensions instead. ✨@Courtney Marie Morris
