A Portsmouth grandma kayaked to drop off key supplies to masked migrant protestors in the sea over the weekend. Video taken from those involved in the protest shows the woman, named online as Joy, paddling up to the men in the sea at Hayling Island before giving them battery packs and water. Hundreds of protesters were in a standoff with police overnight, and roads were blocked for hours in a demonstration similar to that undertaken at the Port of Dover on Saturday. Police helped UK Border Force deal with people who had been escorted ashore in Eastney after being found in the English Channel. The protests followed the arrival of a dinghy carrying 140 people, which crossed the Channel on Sunday after launching from a beach near Cherbourg, in Normandy. It is believed to be the furthest west smugglers have ever launched a small boat. French officials said it was not safe to stop the dinghy at sea. The migrants were brought to the UK by British lifeboat crews. Meanwhile, a grandfather has told how he deflated his own dinghy to stop protesters taking it and how he turned down offers to buy it. Barry John-Williams, 69, said: “They (protesters) were offering to pay me money to take the boat, and I said look it’s staying there, and that’s why I deflated it. What they were going to do with it I don’t know. “One of the idiots, I heard him say they thought the migrants might have come in this boat”, he added, referring to his own small 2.7-metre-long dinghy. Mr John-Williams said the migrants were moored about 50m offshore and that three coaches were parked up waiting for them, “so there must have been 100 plus (migrants).” Police supported UK Border Force in dealing with people who have been escorted ashore in Eastney after being found in the English Channel. It’s understood they will be processed as is routine for small boats. The government has condemned the “thuggish behaviour” of anti-illegal migrant protesters in Dover and Portsmouth over the weekend amid fears from police that traffickers may shift their destinations across England’s south coast.
