finally history class does me well. OK, the reason why Labor Day in New York City has such a strong Caribbean connotation is that when Caribbeans moved to the state, they usually did carnival and things of that nature around Easter but Easter in New York City is cold. They decided Labor Day weekend because it was hot and most people had off because most immigrants were labor workers! The original events actually used to happen around Lent and were indoors because of that fact, but then they decided why don’t we find a way to do it outdoors?

Labor Day was literally created by Black Americans way before it became a federal holiday.

I heard this from my friend from NYC I was like huh? He was sad too when we all told him what Labor Day is about and been around since the 1800s. But I grew up in Ohio where unions are big and Labor Day was a big thing always

Actually, there are two things happening. Caribbean Day and Labor Day. It’s actually called the Caribbean Day parade, but all of us call it Labor Day Parade because it was designed to fall on Labor Day. Everyone on this thread is actually wrong…

Rashaun Deberry :
West Indian Day Parade was only placed on this weekend in the late 1940s as a matter of logistical convenience because New York's winter weather in February was too cold to host Carnival outdoors. It was a weather-based pivot and a way to utilize guaranteed days off from work—not a cultural ownership stake in the holiday.

Labor day is a separate thing from the West Indian Day parade. It just happens on that day.
