My parents were on a mission in Madagascar. All of the young elders were sick. My parents were not allowed to do absolutely anything. My mom wanted to help and she basically was threatened. 🙄

Dude same thing. Got dengue in Brasil and was so sick. Hospital stay. Family never knew. MP told me to not to say anything. Later a companion got Hepatitis C and was sick for a month and bed ridden. Never told parents. I guess we were adults, but still. So fucked up.

I'm blown away that your parents reacted that way. When I wrote my parents about the law breaking, rule breaking, neglect, and corruption of my mission president, they chastised me for criticizing my priesthood leader.

I had an ovarian cyst burst. Horrifically painful. I was in the hospital all night, and then they sent me back out to work the next day after no sleep and agonizing pain. I was not allowed pain. My mission president was a doctor by the way. But his wife was in charge of "medical stuff" and decided that I could work.

I’m an RN and the sheer number of missionaries who have shown up at my house with various ailments and issues was too many. Even after I left the church, they still came by, some still do, they know I’m the one with the bandaids the Tylenol and the ice packs. They don’t take care of these kids at all. AT. ALL.

Not illness related but my brother got in an auto/ bicycle accident when he was in his mission. We were NEVER told ans he had to sue for the church to pay for his medical bills & therapy after. Oh and he had a psycho companion that almost killed him and all they did after the guy strangled my brother was transfer the guy to another area and to a new companion. 🙄🙄

Keeping loved ones in the dark is why they send you away. It reinforces in you the need of the church, even over parents. But no, it’s not a cult.

I had appendicitis and had surgery in Mexico. I didnt tell my president until it was last minute so they couldn't send me home because they never let people go back out of country back then

Uggggg I hate this for you. My nieces and nephews are all going on missions and I’m just scared for them. My nephew is going to Uganda and he can’t go because of an E. coli outbreak 🤦🏻‍♀️

My brother told me a couple years after his mission that he got hit by a bus while he was on his bike in Taiwan and injured his wrist and his knee or ankle I can't remember. And that I could never tell mom or dad. Still has no idea and it's been like 12 years.

I also served in the 90s in the Philippines, and had a companion who had to be tested for leprosy. Again, I was able to tell my parents not sure what happened in the 2000s back in the 90s when it would snail mail for everything my parents were contacted for my mission, and my husband‘s parents were from his mission during health issues

Back in the mid 90s, my husband got dengue fever in the Philippines went to a very sketchy hospital for a couple weeks, and his parents were notified and he talked to his mom on the phone. When international phones were very expensive.
