@drgreghealth: Here are the three supplements I've seen have a profound effect on patients struggling with depression. I've been a functional medicine doctor for more than 25 years, and here's the truth. Depression is currently being treated like a Prozac deficiency. Take a pill, adjust the dose, repeat. That's not the whole story, and treating it like it is has left people no better after years of trying. Number one: Omega-3s, specifically EPA. This isn't a supplement aisle talking point. It's data. EPA does the heavy lifting for mood, not DHA, the opposite of what fish oil marketing pushes on the bottle. Look at the EPA number, not the total omega-3 number on the label. Number two: Saffron. In head-to-head trials, it performed on par with SSRI antidepressants for depression and anxiety, with meaningfully fewer side effects. Say that out loud in a room full of psychiatrists and watch the reaction. That discomfort is worth paying attention to. This isn't permission to quit your medication cold turkey. If you're going to come off it, you always taper, and you always do that under your doctor's supervision. But it's proof there's more than one path, and almost nobody's told you that. Number three: Vitamin D. I'll push back on my own industry here. Broad population trials on vitamin D and depression are mixed. But correct an actual deficiency in someone who's depressed, and the numbers move. Guess, and you get nothing. That's why I test instead of guessing. Depression is not a one-pill problem, no matter how convenient that story is for everyone selling the pill. EPA, saffron, and correcting a real vitamin D deficiency won't replace real care. But pretending they don't matter isn't science, it's habit. Find the root. Heal the whole.

What he is saying about like vitamin D and many other vitamins, that you have to be deficient. (Most people in like the Midwest are) but it obviously won’t work if you don’t need it and most vitamins if you take it and don’t need it it just washes through your system. However, you need to be careful with Vitamin D you can take too much. It won’t happen right away or just once it’s more of if you take 25,000 mg for a month. Not good. Ok for a few days to a week. Do your research. I was shocked when I found all that out.
