The main problem with the fixed exchange rate via reserve currency to gold is that the system would make countries with more trade surplus absorb more gold leaving countries with trade deficits to conduct austerity measures in order to keep the rate on par with the fixed rate. When the fixed exchanged rate regime was deemed to unable to support the size of the global economy, the only way at that time was to abolish the gold standard in order to give raise to governments to freely conduct fiscal policies in injects more liquidity to support the globalization
