Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is under growing pressure after hitting rock-bottom in Saturday's season-opener against LSU. Their 51-10 defeat at the hands of Lane Kiffin's team marked the heaviest loss suffered since Swinney became head coach back in 2008. Swinney called the one-sided loss in the marquee Week 1 matchup a 'worst-case scenario' for his team, while Kiffin had already rubbed salt in the wounds before the game even finished. As he walked off from a halftime interview, with his team leading 31-3, Kiffin quipped: 'Imagine if we had pro players'. Clemson has struggled under Swinney in recent years, making the College Football Playoffs just once in the last six seasons, getting dumped out in the first round against Texas in 2024. Last year, they stuttered to a 7-6 record - their worst since 2010 - raising questions over the future direction of the program now in its 18th season under the same head coach. Swinney signed a ten-year, $115 million contract back in 2022. His buyout for 2026 if Clemson wanted to fire him is $57 million, per Greenville News. The nature of the defeat to LSU has ramped up the pressure on Swinney on the back of last year's poor performances. Sportswriter and OutKick founder Clay Travis claimed on social media: 'LSU ended Clemson's status as a top college football program tonight. Clemson has been teetering on the line for years and you can argue it had already happened before tonight, but this game ended all doubt.' 'Really just a poor performance,' Swinney said after the game. 'Not what we worked for or expected. Give credit to LSU. They did a hell of a job executing their plan. … We just never really gave ourselves a chance to settle in.' 'At the end of the day, you're not gonna win if you don't stop the run. ... We just did a really poor job setting the edge, especially versus the stretch and the quarterback run, which really killed us on third down.' 'All we can do is try to let it develop us and get back to work on Monday. ... We've got a long season ahead. If we'll let this develop us, then we'll get better from it.' 'We just got out-played out-coached in every facet tonight. Ain't no other way to say it. Congratulations again to LSU. ... Coming into this environment, you've gotta try to capture some moment when you get an opportunity, and we didn't do that.' Swinney had taken aim at opposing head coach Kiffin in the buildup to the game over the controversy surrounding players signed to NFL contracts trying to return to LSU. 'It's kind of embarrassing, honestly. It's just embarrassing that that's where we are. I don't blame the kids, people trying to take advantage of the system, I just think it's embarrassing where we are with college football, and we've been there for a while,' Swinney said. 'It's embarrassing. I mean, it really is. We have no rules. There's no governance. I mean, it's a joke. There's zero rules. And when you enforce rules someone just goes and finds a judge to say, 'No, you can't enforce that rule.' Never did I think we'd be living in an era like this, but that's where we are.' Clemson faces Georgia Southern in their home opener next week with Swinney calling on his side to move on from their Week 1 agony. He added: 'This one is over. I know everybody's focus will be on the score. We've got to put our focus on what we can control. This one is over.' 'It's a tough opener, and it was kind of a worst-case scenario for us. ... We can't let it define us or destroy us. We're going to get better. We are going to get better.' 'They're a really good football team, and we're a lot better than we played. ... I was proud of them.
