Within a day of returning, many found their accounts flooded with identical hostile messages. Three days after they left, Tucker Carlson said his rage was aimed at them: "theology so deranged that they think their Christian faith requires them to support the murder of children." The summer before, an Israeli shell had hit the only Catholic church in Gaza and killed three people. Israel's army said its own shell had hit the church. Six weeks after the pastors flew home, the Patriarchs and Heads of Churches in Jerusalem issued a statement: "Recent activities undertaken by local individuals who advance damaging ideologies, such as Christian Zionism, mislead the public, sow confusion, and harm the unity of our flock." In June 2026 the Southern Baptist Convention, more than 50,000 churches, met in Orlando. Southern Baptist leaders had been on the plane. It passed a resolution against antisemitism. It names October 7. It names Jerusalem. It does not contain the word Palestinian. Not Gaza. Not the West Bank. Not Bethlehem. A Palestinian Christian in the West Bank wrote to them in July: "Bethlehem is still here, and so are we."
