Things I didn’t know about composting until I started composting 🌱🪴 💚 Composting isn’t complicated 💚 A good compost requires equal parts green & brown material (or up to 75% brown), air & some moisture. This ensures the right conditions for the bacteria needed for the decomposition process. We turn our compost about once a month to let the air in & check moisture levels. It’s not essential (and it can be hard work!) to turn your compost but it can speed up the process. If you have one bin you can simply stir the contents. Compost should be lightly moist - not saturated but not dry either. If it’s too wet you’ll know - it’ll start to get sludgy and stinky. If it’s too dry it won’t do much at all. Brown material is anything brown: cardboard, woody chips, dry leaves & straw. Green material is green living material: plant prunings, kitchen peelings & grass clippings. 💚 Compost doesn’t smell 💚 A well balanced compost doesn’t smell. 💚 You can compost meat, dairy, fish & cooked food! 💚 We have a bokashi bin under the sink in our kitchen which we use for these items. The bokashi process pickles the food before adding it to the compost, making it decompose more quickly and making it less attractive to rodents. It’s really easy to do - just add a handful of bokashi bran into the bucket with the food items and press down, returning the lid. Bones decompose faster when they’ve been softened by boiling so I always make stock with any bones before adding to the bokashi! Warning: bokashi does smell for a couple of days after you add it to the compost bin, but I think it’s totally worth it. 💚 You don’t need a huge space 💚 Whether your garden is big or small, you can compost! You can make a bin to fit your space or you can buy a shape and size that works for you. The less mass in a compost bin the more slowly it will decompose so it’s a good idea to chop up anything going into your compost quite small. We started composting in a very small garden and it worked really well 🌱 #compost #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #selfsufficient #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden
