@forbidden.azazel: One of the most common reasons Muslims propose for the Quran’s divine authorship isn’t even an agreed fact #quran #muhammad #deconstruction #exmuslim #islamichistory

You’re cherry picking the Hadiths that suit your narrative best. Sahih Muslim 1783c says “So he told 'Ali to strike out these words. 'Ali said: No, by Allah, I will not strike them out. The Messenger of Allah (may Peace be upon him) said: Show me their place (on the parchment). So he ('Ali) showed him their place and he (the Holy Prophet) struck them out; and 'Ali wrote: Ibn 'Abdullah.”

The Quran also appears to contradict the tradition that believed that they spliced the Quran together, it rather appears to have been written at once without splicing, which requires one literary designer writing it

Weak argument, my grandmother can say her name and say “hi/hello” in english doesn’t mean she can read or write completely

Have you spoken about the standardization process of the Quran? It’s interesting seeing the inner Islamic debate about the validity of Hadiths. From an exmuslim perspective, I enjoy the points Hadith rejectors make but it confuses me if many Muslims know how the Quran came to be. I learn the process of the Quran coming down in a mystical way but as I got older we were taught the process. The verses came down through multiple avenue and many of it is “inspirations.” A very intense thought or a meditative state would be the vehicle for many verses. Really interesting because the same points Hadith rejectors make can be sad for the Quran itself. Like many artists speak of intense feelings that are sudden and random that put them in a flow state to make some of the greatest songs… it’s so similar to the way revelations or inspirations are given down….under those standards wouldn’t Michael Jackson be a prophet 😭😭😭

He was a well traveled merchant, probably could read, maybe not write or write well. The whole illiterate thing was most likely made later scholars to defend against accusations of him being the (very obvious) author of the quran

i don’t see your point, many muslims including myself believe he could read and write, just that he wasn’t taught by man how to do so, god just gave him the knowledge

Wait this entire time he was illiterate till his death? I thought once he started receiving the Quran he was able to read and write ? Or it wasnt the case ( based on the Islamic narration?)

I would like to know what their standard of illiterate was. If you knew the basics to write an intelligible letter maybe that wasn’t good enough to be considered literate. Being a scribe was a job after all and you probably had to be better than know how to write, you owe two camels. There are a lot of little details that can completely change the meaning

I’d assume he was literate to an extent, considering it was said he was a merchant and a good one at that

I agree with most of ur comment but literacy can be learned if we r to be believe the 1st revelation was Iqra (read) it is suffice to say that the prophet (pbuh) was learning reading and by extension writing as well)

let's say he can write and read but that's would be after he was a prophet because when the first verse of the quran was sent he told Gabriel "I can't read"

I think this is more of an interpretation issue than a outright contradiction, literacy has so many dynamics so two people can make contradictory yet equally arguably true statements
