@iamemperor1st: Today, we remember Robert Gabriel Mugabe, one of Africa's most influential and controversial post-independence leaders, on the anniversary of his passing. To many across Africa and the wider Black world, Mugabe became a symbol of resistance to colonial rule, white-minority domination and the continued control of African land and resources. From his years in the liberation struggle against Rhodesia to leading an independent Zimbabwe, he consistently spoke about African sovereignty, self-determination and the belief that Africans should control their own future. His legacy remains deeply debated, particularly because of the violence, political repression and economic decline that occurred during his decades in power. But his place in African history - especially his role in the struggle against colonialism and his uncompromising language on land and sovereignty - cannot be separated from the wider story of Black liberation on the continent.
