When people come to the cemetery for a funeral and they haven’t been here for a long, long time, they arrive with anxiety. Then, slowly, they become humbled. They walk around, reading the names, the dates, the ages. Children, youth, adults, elders. Lives that once laughed, struggled, hoped, and dreamed — now reduced to a few words carved in stone. They leave the cemetery not the way they entered. Something inside them shifts. A detachment from the world settles in, and a deep question echoes in the heart: What is this world? Why are we running? We carried our friend in. We prayed over him. We lowered him into the ground. Then we walked away — without him. And that is the reality. The cemetery is a quiet place with a very loud message. It teaches us without words. It reminds us that this life is temporary, that everything we chase will eventually be left behind, and that one day, we will be the ones being carried. Allah says: “Every soul shall taste death, and you will only be given your full reward on the Day of Resurrection.” (Qur’an 3:185) And the Prophet ﷺ said: “Remember often the destroyer of pleasures: death.” (Tirmidhi) The grave strips us of pride, status, titles, wealth, and appearance. What remains is our deeds. So before we are carried, let us carry good. Before we are washed, let us cleanse our hearts. Before we are shrouded, let us clothe ourselves with taqwa. Before we are buried, let us plant deeds that will light our graves. Because one day, someone will walk away from our funeral… just like we walk away today. #cemetery #death #reminder #muslimundertaker #uk
