My hair is literally pin straight so the only way I’ve been able to get a curl to stay is skipping conditioner in the shower and adding a mousse when blow drying, and let the curls set for like an hour while you do your makeup, but otherwise the you’ve got the technique down

if your hair doesn’t hold curls well try using a styling mousse or a texture spray! it helps give your hair more grit so it won’t fall out so easily. also waiting to brush the hair out until it’s fully cool will help it hold better as well
