Four Vanderbilt University football players were convicted and sentenced to prison after r*ping an unconscious woman on campus. On June 23. 2013 Brandon Vandenburg (20) and Jane Doe* (21) were out drinking and partying with friends. The two had been dating for awhile, and when the night ended the pair returned to Jane Doe’s off-campus apartment. Brandon was not able to get her key to work, so he decided to go back to his dorm. Brandon called his three teammates, Corey Batey (19), Brandon Banks (19), Jaborian “Tip” Mckenzie (19), and asked them to meet in front of Juliette Hall’s Dormitory. The young men were seen on surveillance carrying Jane Doe who was visibly unconscious. They picked her up, dropped her, dragged her off the elevator, and were also seen laughing before carrying her inside dorm room 213. For half an hour, the four football players SA assaulted Jane, and recorded the incident on their cellphones. The men were later seen rushing out of the dorm, leaving Brandon panicking, and rushing to cover up what occurred. The following days, word began to spread on campus and Jane was brought in by authorities. Jane was unable to recall the night she was SA, and initially believed that Brandon would never hurt her. Police were contacted by the dorm hall when they discovered Dorm 213’s door had been broken. After the university reviewed the surveillance, and saw what happened that evening they handed it over to police. Text messages, voicemails, pictures, videos, and interviews with other football players uncovered the truth about the incident. On August 9th, 2013 the four men were charged with Aggravated R*pe and S*xual Battery. In 2015, Brandon Vandenburg was sentenced to 17 years in prison, and Corey Bates was sentenced to 15 years. For two years Brandon Banks went on to play football at Lane College, before he was also sentenced to 15 years in 2017.
