Day 336 When I joined university, I didn't know anyone. No network. No connections. No idea who I was going to meet. But I quickly realized something: if you want to build a strong career, you can't afford to stay in your room and wait for people to find you. Here's how I built friendships, relationships and eventually my professional network: 1. I joined clubs and societies. I deliberately put myself in rooms where I could meet people with similar interests. 2. I walked up to people and introduced myself. Yes, it can feel awkward. Do it anyway. Most people are also looking for someone to talk to. 3. I attended events. Tech events, talks, competitions, meetups, hackathons, anything that put me around people doing interesting things. 4. I volunteered. Volunteering gets you into rooms you might not otherwise have access to. You get to work alongside people, and relationships naturally form. 5. I worked on projects with other people. Some of my strongest relationships came from building things together. When you solve problems with someone, you get to know them differently. 6. I followed up. Meeting someone once isn't networking. Send the message. Check in. Share something useful. Stay connected. 7. I became useful. Don't approach networking with “What can this person do for me?” Ask yourself: “How can I contribute?” Your university network can become your professional network. The person sitting next to you in first year could become a founder. Your clubmate could become a hiring manager. The person you meet at a random event could introduce you to your first opportunity. Don't just go to university to get a degree. Go there to build relationships, skills, experiences and opportunities. And if you're starting university now, start building your network from Day 1.
