In Iran, thousands of women have trained in Ninjutsu, a Japanese martial art, since it was introduced to the country in 1989. The program was started in Tehran by martial arts instructor Sensei Akbar Faraji after he trained in Japan. Reports say around 25,000 to 30,000 women have graduated from the program over the years, with roughly 3,500 to 4,000 active practitioners. These women are often called “kunoichi,” a traditional Japanese term for female ninja. Despite the dramatic “female ninja army” headlines online, the training is mainly a martial arts and sports program, not a secret group of assassins. The women practice self-defense, fitness, acrobatics, stealth movements, balance, mental discipline and traditional weapons skills such as staff and chain fighting. The program operates openly and is reported to be regulated through Iran’s martial arts and sports authorities. Training can take place in sports centers and public outdoor spaces, with participants following Iran’s dress rules by wearing black training clothes along with headscarves. So, while the idea of thousands of female ninjas in Iran sounds like something from an action movie, the reality is much more ordinary: it is a large martial arts program where women train in physical fitness, discipline and self-defense.
