Two words make me think the human species might actually be maturing: open source. For much of history, when humans discovered something valuable, our instinct was to control it, protect it, patent it, restrict access to it, and make sure we benefited before sharing it with everyone else. Open source challenges that instinct. It says: Here it is. Look at it. Test it. Use it. Improve it. Build something better on top of it. The Internet helped demonstrate the power of that idea, and technologies like Bitcoin carry it forward. Instead of limiting innovation to the people already sitting at the table, open source allows people around the world to participate, contribute, and build. And that matters because the more people we include in solving problems, the more human ingenuity we have working toward solutions. Maybe one sign that we’re maturing as a species is realizing that progress doesn’t always come from keeping our discoveries to ourselves.
