@leadingladiesafrica: Sometimes, the sheer number of ways women can be subjected to violence is difficult to comprehend. Acid attacks are one of them. We talk about gender-based violence so often that people can become desensitised to it. Some even think we’re being dramatic or talking about it too much. Then you hear stories like these. Frances Obanye(@_iamchizzy), a Nigerian biochemist, was attacked with acid by her uncle’s wife while trying to protect her brother. Benta Ouma, a Kenyan mother of three, who was attacked at the age of 16 because she turned down a man’s love interest. Two women. Two very different circumstances. Both left dealing with the devastating aftermath of an acid attack. It is difficult to comprehend that someone can deliberately inflict this kind of pain on another human being. The damage doesn’t end when the attack is over. There are the physical scars, the trauma, the stigma, the pain and the process of learning how to live in a body that has been permanently changed. This is why conversations about violence against women cannot be reduced to one story or one type of violence. Sometimes we think we have heard it all. We haven’t. And perhaps the most important thing is that we don’t become so used to hearing these stories that they stop shocking us. Watch their stories. Talk about them. Share this conversation.
