Feeling overwhelmed by gratitude for the incredible fall mushroom season that we’ve had here in California. Thanks to early and relatively consistent rain, there has been an explosion of diversity. Across both coastal and inland habitats, fruiting bodies have burst for from the ground, presenting a plethora of shapes, sizes, and colors. The purpose of each and every single one of these mushrooms is to spread spores of the mycelium below, the actual “body” of the fungus. The mushrooms themselves are just ephemeral reproductive structures, color and charismatic, but ultimately short-lived. Thus, we rejoice in their impermanence and celebrate their existence, especially those of us who loved to forge, cook, and eat mushrooms. . I am also extremely grateful for all of you! Especially those of you who followed me for many years as I have progressed from amateur to expert. For me, mushrooms started as a hobby, but have snowballed into a full-blown career. This is definitely not the trajectory I had planned, but I am thoroughly enjoying the ride. I’m particularly appreciative of everyone who has bought a copy of my “Passport to Kingdom Fungi” and hope that you will recommend it to your loved ones. . For anyone who is curious, there are multiple reasons why I tap mushrooms. First it helps me assess the density/maturity of a mushroom. Second, it works to remove dirt and bugs before I pick the mushroom. Third, I enjoy the unique residence of each mushroom and the noise they make. Explicitly I do not tap them to “spread the spores” as is often incorrectly assumed, mushrooms are fully capable of doing that on their own. Also important to note that pick vs. cutting a mushroom makes no difference on the future appearance of mushrooms, cutting may actually be harmful to some species since it leaves the mycelium at risk for infection. . Wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving, I hope you are all in good company while enjoying some marvelously tasty mushrooms! . #thanksgiving #taptapcronch #mushroomasmr #tappingasmr #asmrtapping
