What Unions Won For Canadians • The Weekend & 8-Hour Workday: Won after Toronto printers struck in 1872 and forced Canada to legalize unions in the first place. • Paid Maternity & Parental Leave: Won by postal workers (CUPW) in 1981 after a 42-day walkout. • The Right to Refuse Unsafe Work: Won by Elliot Lake uranium miners in 1974 after striking over hidden cancer risks. How Doug Ford Is Fighting Workers: • Bill 47: Stripped paid sick days and froze the minimum wage. • Bill 124: Unconstitutionally capped frontline healthcare and care worker pay during record inflation. • Bill 28: Tried to ban low-wage school workers from striking using $4,000/day fines and the Notwithstanding Clause. • Stolen Wages: Refusing retroactive pay for thousands of underfunded developmental and social service workers who suffered under his illegal wage cap.
