Our school nurse gave each teacher some apple juice boxes in case of emergencies. I’m a teacher and totally get that it’s embarrassing to a 12 year old. What about her binder? I put some fruit snacks

In 1968, at the age of 9, I was dx'd with T1d. Boy oh boy the lows I've had and many times without a snack available. Somehow I managed but wish I had been taught otherwise. Be very firm. It is a matter of life and death. Maybe a reward program??

My Daughter just got diagnosed this year, she’s 11 and I struggled with getting her to carry her snacks too until last week when she literally almost passed out from being too low and her friend called me from school telling me what was going on….. I asked where her bag was and she told me her bag was in her locker 😥 I stressed the importance to her that sometimes things like this just happen and it’s not always in our control however the one thing we can do is CARRY THE BAG! Even if it’s inconvenient, even if it’s “embarrassing or bulky” staying alive is more important!!!! In my opinion, all kids, love snacks!! So maybe throw extra in her bag and she can ask her friends if they want a fruit snack with her or some candy with her!! 🥰

It only took me one time to have a low when I didn’t have snacks to recover to never go anywhere without them. Skittles are good, little icing tubes, etc. I’ve had two severe lows in my life-one I was hospitalized….It was NOT worth it.

I have a diabetic bag a carry it has a glucagone shoot and some of my easy to carry low snacks. If want to carry less can do but cost more those gel thingys that have glucose. She need to not worry so much about others and it can be hard

T1D since I was 4 and I went through it too. I don't know what to tell you to get her through that. We don't want to stand out. Give each teacher some stuff for her.

I was diagnosed at 10, this was 100% me as a teenager. I hated being a diabetic and I hated when people (friends etc) would stress over me treating lows or taking insulin. I just always got to pick out a cute bag I felt comfortable with, there’s so many belt bags and crossbody bags (that are in style) that could fit her phone and some cool snacks like nerd clusters that will make sure she’s safe while she’s out and about! It’s hard and I totally understand as a mom how stressful it is for you and as being in her shoes and feeling like she just wants a break and be with her friends! It’s SO hard 🩷🩷🩷

It’s her job to keep herself safe. Teach her to be self reliant instead of you pushing your wants on her. Ask her what she wants to do to manage her diabetes. She is old enough to do it. The way she is resisting tells me you are being to pushy and nagging her. We T1’s don’t want to be nagged. She is starting to rebel so how you handle this going forward is going to be extremely important.

is there any chance she will eat glucose tabs? I feel like those were the easiest for me to conceal and I always had pockets. later I was lucky we carried purses by the time 6th grade came around. I wasnt allowed to carry anything for lows even in high school per school policy. it was an insane rule. I know glucose tabs are not perfect but I would be honest and let her know how much more embarrassing it would be if they passed out in front of their friends. Sadly, that fortification made me carry glucose tabs on me. hugs. stay the course w her. I empathize w both of you. it isbone of those things that will take her far. it comes w the age. my 12 yo has pots and she wont even carry salty snacks and electrolytes bc she feels I am making I big deal 😭

Get her an expensive cute bag to put it in lol. I was diagnosed at 3 and am 32 now so I feel her but I had an ugly zippered medical bag. Now with cgms I barely have to carry anything - insulin and a juice

Is there a compromise where she can get a cute purse or bag in order to carry these things?

She needs a cute little crossbody purse. For the longest my son carried a small backpack everywhere. Now it’s mainly just in his car in case. But always leaves the house with at least a pack of gummies in his pocket.

I agree low snacks are important to carry. I have used old medication bottles and filled with skittles. I usually keep a tube of glucose tabs and a zip lock of gummy bears in my purse at all times 🥰 best of luck

I was 14, and for the longest time I didn’t carry anything at any time. My parents were older and thought I was doing what I was supposed to do. It wasn’t until I was 20 and had a severe low, and didn’t have anything. My friends were with me, and knew exactly what to do. They were the ones that scolded me, and from that moment on I did what I was supposed to. I never wanted anyone to know, plus I felt differently and was so ashamed. I guess I blame it on being a teen, and always wanting to fit in. All the while I did in fact fit in, but I didn’t know that.

I feel ya- as far as the classrooms go, just send them in she doesn’t have to know they are there as long as the teachers know it’s there for an emergency. Half the battle may be she doesn’t wanna deliver it? 🤷♀️

I have a 13 year old she has been a t1d since she was 10 and I went through this with her just last year. I took her out for a day together and we talked I simply said I noticed she seemed to be struggling and asked her how I could help her. she told me exactly everything your daughter said. so I asked her how can we compromise to make sure she was safe. she said she really didnt know so I said how about we do a small backpack or a small wrist wallet? she agreed to the small wrist wallet. it holds her low snacks, her poker, test strips, and insulin. question is she not allowed to have a backpack in class? even a small one? my child was allowed to because we put it as medical necessary in her 504 because we are trying to give more independence.

Hi love, I’m T1 since I was 10, 31 now! I went through the exact same thing when I was a bit older than your daughter due to burnout, but I didn’t tell my mam so the fact you know about it is a good sign. Is therapy an option? Or if someone in her diabetes team has a background in psychology and long by term illness they might be a help to her. I could also write something to your daughter via dm to your account (and no reply from your daughter is expected of course) as someone who went through the same thing. Here if you need me! ❤️

T1D since 17 months old. Now 46. No technology during my school days. We were allowed backpacks w us. But I know times have changed. You’re completely correct in needing to think about lock downs. I would make a bag like a gallon ziplock back for each class. Put skittles, fruit snacks, and maybe like some peanut butter crackers in each for each classroom. Maybe you and not her should drop them off to each teacher to keep in his/her desk. Just to take some pressure off your kiddo. She already feels different from everyone else. Just my thoughts.

T1D Mom :
See I don’t let my 11 yr old go anywhere without a baqsimi. He has a belt that goes under his shirt. I also make a low box for each classroom with my kids name on it kept up by the teacher. He knows it’s a non negotiable for me. Maybe get her something cute she can carry that’s small with a little hard candies she can pop in her mouth. Does she have to carry her phone?
