@blacksuccessproject: For centuries, one of the world's most familiar maps has made Africa look smaller than it really is. Now, the United Nations has backed an effort to change that. On September 4, 2026, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution encouraging the use of map projections that more accurately represent the relative sizes of countries and continents. The resolution passed overwhelmingly, with 164 countries voting in favor, one against and six abstaining. At the center of the debate is the Mercator projection, developed in the 16th century. It remains one of the world's most recognizable map designs, but it dramatically enlarges land masses as they approach the poles. The result can be startling. Greenland, for example, can appear comparable in size to Africa on a Mercator map. In reality, Africa is about 14 times larger. Equal-area projections such as Equal Earth preserve relative land area more accurately, revealing just how enormous Africa actually is. The UN resolution does not ban Mercator maps or require the world to adopt one specific replacement. Instead, it encourages governments, educational institutions, international organizations and technology companies to use equal-area projections when accurately comparing geographic size matters.
