Imo, he did say things are complicated and they had been fighting a lot. He had been thinking of what to do. He wanted to take a rest and get out of it, you told him it was simple hanging out, not romantically. He also did say that he had a girlfriend at the start. Maybe its not so intentional. Regarding him asking what 'She doesnt have to know' means, he might still thinks its a friendly chat and his girlfriend wont know so he can finally get out of the fights
