my grandfather fought in the trenches in WWI. With the curiosity of youth I remember asking him about it but he would never talk of it. He suffered shell shock and had a frequent stammer. I have his medals -still wrapped in tissue paper in the small box they were sent him. He never wore them

My great-grandfather served with the 16th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, during the Passchendaele campaign. On 26 September 1917, during the Battle of Polygon Wood near Zonnebeke, heavy casualties left him the senior NCO on the Red Line. He assumed command of his platoon and, under very difficult conditions, showed what his commanding officer described as “great initiative and coolness” in reorganising and leading his men. For his conduct that day, he was recommended for distinction.
