@nikkiwalsh.adaptfit: Y’all, sometimes I have to remind my fiancé, and most of my family that I’m still disabled 😂♿️ Because while I do try to be SUPER independent, my body still doesn’t work the same way a fully able-body person’s body does. My spinal cord injury is at T2, so I am paralyzed from the chest down. This means I don’t have the same core, abdominal, and intercostal muscle function assisting me during movement AND breathing. My diaphragm works, but it’s doing its job without all of the backup it had before my injury... For example y’all, I have to assist myself to cough, sneeze, or hiccup fully😅 My sneeze isn’t ‘dainty’ lol it just is struggling and needs some assistance!! 🤣🤣 So while sometimes my cardio looks like an actual cardio workout...sometimes it looks like transferring in and out of my wheelchair, doing my hair, vacuuming my house, making my bed, getting dressed, pushing my chair up a ramp, loading my chair into the car, or just living my everyday life😮‍💨 And THAT is something I think people don’t always see about living with a spinal cord injury. Being independent doesn’t mean things are easy for me. It just means I’ve spent 8 years figuring out how to do hard things differently, and then strength training & practicing them so they aren’t as hard! So during Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, here’s your reminder that disability isn’t always visible in the amount of help someone needs.
