Why is it that whenever a person of color starts a business, some of the first criticism comes from within our own community—often from people who have never experienced what it actually costs to build and operate a business? There are expenses behind every product: ingredients, supplies, packaging, equipment, licenses, transportation, labor, marketing, taxes, and countless hours of work. A business cannot serve its community if it cannot survive. We should absolutely expect businesses to provide quality and value, but we also have to understand the cost of entrepreneurship. Supporting businesses in our communities means giving them an opportunity to grow, improve, create jobs, and eventually give back. Before complaining about the price, sometimes we need to understand what it costs to create the product and keep the doors open.
