1491 is an eye opening book on this subject if anyone is new to this topic. Estimates for ancient South America's populations were off by tens of millions. The Americas had more people than Europe, with larger cities, and could afford UBI. It wasn't perfect by any means, there was much corruption and violence. But the quality of life for the average citizen was very good.
