Here's why. Rakuten is running a Labor Day event and the rates have roughly tripled. Rakuten is a cash back platform. You shop through their portal at stores you already buy from and earn a percentage of your purchase back in cash. Today a long list of stores is at 15%. Most of them sit at 2% or 3% the rest of the year. Don't take the cash. Link your Amex to Rakuten and switch your payout to points. Now 15% cash back turns into 15x Membership Rewards points. Then add what your card already earns: ✅ 15x Rakuten ✅ 1x base card earn 16x Membership Rewards points on every dollar at the 15% stores. Here's the board. Ray-Ban is up to 20%, which is 21x with your base earn. 🕶️ Foot Locker, Dermstore, iHerb and Viator are all at 15%. LEGO is up to 15%. Sam's Club is up to 12%. Viator is the one people sleep on. Those are the tours and excursions on a trip you already booked. Book them through Rakuten and you're earning 16x on money you were spending anyway. Shop in the Rakuten app, not the browser extension. The elevated rates live in the app. Two things that will cost you points.
