@beyeperfect: “This is the tomb of …yahu, who is over the house.” That ancient Hebrew inscription was carved above a rock-cut tomb in Silwan, just outside ancient Jerusalem. The beginning of the man’s name is missing, but his title survives: “who is over the house,” a designation for a high-ranking royal official. That makes Isaiah 22 especially interesting. Isaiah confronts Shebna, a royal official described with the same expression, “which is over the house,” and condemns him for carving himself an impressive tomb. Scholars have long considered whether the Silwan tomb could have belonged to the biblical Shebna. Because the crucial beginning of the name is lost, the identification remains uncertain. But the surviving evidence creates a remarkable parallel. Isaiah describes a royal official “over the house” carving himself a tomb. At Silwan, an ancient tomb inscription identifies its owner as a man “…yahu, who is over the house.” #BiblicalArchaeology #Isaiah #Shebna #BibleHistory
