I'm very curious to find out with ECMO if you're not actually breathing does your brain freak out and think you're suffocating and make you try to breathe, or does it just give into the system and realize it's getting the oxygen it needs and therefore let you be calm and not freak out that you're not actually inhaling oxygen

I remember asking of my 4 month old son was breathing when he was put on ecmo his chest wasn't rising qnd collapsing the nurse said hes breathing and pulled back the blanket his chest still didnt rise and fall its was scariest thing but my boy made it hes 8 months now this all happened in May 2026😭

I don’t know but I genuinely was expecting that 100% of ECMO patients would be sedated, this must be so disturbing to live through that awake? Since you don’t need to exhale CO2 and inhale oxygen, do you just don’t breathe while on the machine?
