Runner A. If this sport is going to be about competition, the one who wins, wins.

I think one backyard can’t be compared to another - the ‘winner’ is defined by the rest of the pack each time. Not saying one of those runners can’t be the better one, but I don’t think the format can allow a true test

What’s dif than other running events is that in true byu racing, your PR is also determined by second place (assuming we’re talking about winners here). The entire thing is based around your competition. If we’re comparing PRs outside of real byu races, that might as well be like submitting a training time trail as your official race result for a road race. Races matter, competition matters, and performance day of matters. So yeah, I’ll take the 1on1 W instead

I don’t really like to pick who’s “the best” when it comes to backyard ultras, running, hiking, triathlons, or any other sport. Everyone comes into it with different circumstances, different abilities, different experience levels, different goals, and different challenges they’ve had to overcome just to get there. Not everyone is chasing a podium or trying to prove they’re better than someone else. Sometimes the biggest accomplishment is simply showing up, pushing your own limits, and doing the best you can at something you enjoy. Fast or slow, first or last, 5 miles or 100. I respect anyone willing to challenge themselves and keep going. You never really know what it took for someone to get to that starting line, and that alone deserves respect.

The answer is clear.... there is no 'Better' runner. both are dedicated and phenomenal! ultras have winners, but no one is BETTER. we each have good and bad days, good and bad races.... none of these things make you the better runner. 💜💜

The better "runner" might be someone who has unbelievable running economy, scary endurance and an ability to run further... but the "better backyard ultra runner" knows his competition, his relative strengths and executes on the day

It’s hard to say who has a better pr. Unless it’s the same course with the same conditions. Personally I think whoever wins in a head to head on any given day is the better athlete. Both athletes prepped for the race both have fueling down to their science and have their gear on the same day on the same course on the same day in the same conditions. Just my thoughts.

What if….Runner C shows up having never ran a backyard before and runs 96 loops? Who then would be the better runner?

It's hard to say over a competition. You have to look at a longer perspective.

Whoever wins on the day is a better runner. PRs are set in different conditions, while head to head battle commences in the same conditions for both.
