Road Alignment Setting Out Using a Total Station Before a road is constructed, the design on paper has to be transferred accurately onto the ground and this is where surveying plays a major role. A total station is one of the key instruments surveyors use for road construction and setting out works. The process generally begins with establishing the instrument over a known control point and orienting it to another known point. Once the instrument is correctly set up and oriented, the surveyor can begin setting out the designed road alignment. The centreline is established by setting out calculated points along the alignment. Chainages such as 0+000, 0+010, 0+020 and so on help identify positions along the road. From the centreline, offsets can then be set out to establish road edges and positions for features such as drains, kerbs and other construction elements. In simple terms: The design is on the plan.
