Buying a Lastenrad is a game changer. I only have one kid and our kindergarten is four blocks away but the amount of stuff these kids want to bring with them for any outing is outrageous. I could put his sand toys, scooter, bike and him all in at once, not mention whatever groceries or recycling errands you need to run as well. I’ve even done ikea runs with it. They hold 100kg in the cargo basket so there’s not much difference as the kids get bigger/heavier and even I ride in it when I go out with my husband. It’s worth the money and here in Munich we have the jobrad program and often a city subsidy. Also do some research with the baboe, they had a major recall a couple years ago.

Invest in good winter clothes. Biking in rain and snow is frankly way more of a pain than dressing appropriately and walking.

german mom without car here, get a cover for the stroller and a good coat and walk, not a fan of bikes myself and in the winter more stressful than walking imo, but you could try. I just took a longer route with the Bus If the weather was reaaly shitty, because there was no direct line to kita. Can't take the lastenrad in the bus so you would still have to get wet If it's raining Cats and dogs.

Biking in shitty weather is - in my opinion - much worse than walking, especially with a normal bike where your kid is out in the rain. So I would keep walking. If you need to get there faster, I would buy a cargo-bike with a “cabin” for the kid and the stuff you need to take with you.

A 20 minute walk would be about 1,5 kilometres. I wouldn’t invest a huge amount of money for such a short distance. And riding a bike on snowy or icy roads in winter is dangerous. Get good clothes for you and your child and enjoy your walk. Sing children’s songs on your way.

do your normal walk just with more clothes in winter if you want to bike thats great when the weather is nice or just rainy, when its frozen be carefull

I’m not sure if your partner works a corporate job but a lot of companies offer very good deals to lease e-bikes specially those with the carrier. It is not always obvious that the company offers it but you might want to try and ask. All my colleagues with children do it

Cargo E-bike with weatherproof cover for the carrier. You won’t regret it. Think of how much you would be spending on gas, car payments, insurance if you were in the US using a car for drop off. This is just a one time investment.

I always used a normal bike with a bicycle trailer - they are not as expensive as an Ebike and you can get a used one on Kleinanzeigen. My friends even gave theirs away for free.

I would get a thule chariot a croozer both exist also with double seat for two kids. you can push them on foot or pull them on the bike. pushing might still be an option depending on how bad the winter weather is. where I live you simply don’t want to risk biking in certain conditions. I don’t like the “Lastenrad” so much. your kids are just this small for a short time and I think it’s a super big investment. likely u won’t use it anymore once they are a bit older. but I know they are very fashionable but not really safe.

We love the ebike + Thule chariot in Switzerland. I can use it as a stroller w/ 2 seats! Tried the cargo with seats in front but didn’t like how heavy it was and I can’t put it on a car

Get yourself a woksi bag, for the stroller! That will keep your kid warm, and then dress for the wether, and walk!☺️I got my self a snow suit, the best thing ever!

Cargo bike. TEST drive it. We started with a Christiania. It was awesome, like a huge kinderwagon, eventually had two kids in it until 12 yrs of age. Now we have a TFK with a bench seat and a Chike -which I use for all the errands (groceries, alt glass recycling). My friends love their urban arrow. Test drive and pick the knee that makes you feel most confident. Long term, these bikes are a huge benefit and replace a lot of car trips.
