This is pure conjecture, but it seems like there is a specific “channel” for tactile input. When you do that mental flip, you’re switching the channel to a different stimuli vector. While you can flip the streams, you can’t maintain four channels at once (left touching, left touched, right touching, right touched). We just don’t have the bandwidth for that without significant mental training.

this is like the second time he's talked about something i personally thought about at one point which feels kinda crazy. ive thought about this specifically in regards to temperature, like how if you touch a part of your body that's colder than your hand, you both feel the warmth from your hand in that spot, and the cold from that spot in your hand. its pretty crazy
