you are absolutely correct! my father worked for 60 years at the same company and they didn't even so much as give him a "party" at his retirement. it's absolutely not worth it to stay at the same company at all. this is the whole new job market. frustrating. and I completely agree with you.

Yep! This doesn't really happen with truck drivers but! My son in law has been working towards his journeyman license as an electrician. Going to a weekly class at our local community college. He's three years in. Goes to work all summer and then because he's "qualified" to do more than what his boss has him doing and he's supposed to be getting a pay raise (nothing big) he was fired! Of course, once he's done with his last year of school, they "want him back" as a journeyman! How, why? They talked about "loyalty" at the Christmas party and now that the budget won't work, he's being let go. This man has a wife, her daughter and their little boy and my daughter is pregnant! Somehow he's got to pay rent and provide for his family and figure out how to finish his last year of school without the company paying for it. They deduct from his pay for his school! I guess it's a good thing they still live with us but they were planning on finally getting out on their own so they would have room for the kids. Realize, my granddaughter will be 14 in a couple weeks! He has an interview with another company this week so he should have a job soon but this is a cautionary tale for anyone looking at these jobs around here. They don't warn you about how they're going to dump you when you are just about done because they can hire someone cheaper than you!

They also will say they’re hiring all the time because they get a tax credit for it. So they interview people and then just don’t hire anyone. This was from a Circle K where there is always a big banner saying Now Hiring on every building.

It’s 100% because they can pay younger people less. My husband was let go last year. He and one other person did the same job. My husband made more. They got rid of him and after a couple months hired someone new for the position and are paying them like $20k less.

Of course they're doing that. Companies have been trying to avoid giving pensions for decades

I think it's for sure because they are cheaper. I think they will be surprised though when younger 20 somethings graduating from college also won't stay on a job that doesn't pay appropriately, and they aren't willing to be taken advantage off like we were because "that's how it is". They have boundaries that they don't mind keeping.

My daughter has always had a terrible time finding jobs and she is only 25. She has some college but she only went 2 semesters because it was so expensive.

If you're willing to, look into working from home. The pay isn't a lot to start with, but it's at least something! Insurance work. I keep getting contacts from like Indeed and LinkedIn because I have experience with it. But the joke's on them! I can't work anymore so I'm on SSDI and I'm not going back to work. I'm older than you and you would think I'd want to get back to work. I absolutely don't and I still have appointments for oncology every 6 weeks so I'm not a good candidate anyway. I'd say start there. $19-24 an hour and stay home for customer service work. And it's easy to learn. 😀

That and trainable, many companies want employees to not have work habits that don't fit their model. The old saying "Old habits..."

Is exactly what it is. It’s all about the money and they’re getting rid of the people that cost too much. I’m bringing in newbies who are floundering but are much cheaper.

The disconnect = companies want ALOT (degree & skilled experience) and offer very little pay ($18/hr). 💯%
