@saint: A toppled Buddha statue inside a temple in Mandalay, following the devastating 2025 Myanmar earthquake. On March 28, 2025, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck central Myanmar near the Sagaing Fault, causing widespread destruction across Mandalay, Sagaing, and surrounding regions. Alongside the enormous human toll, the earthquake damaged temples, monasteries, pagodas, historic buildings, and other cultural landmarks, some of which had survived for generations. Images of fallen Buddha statues inside damaged temples became particularly striking symbols of the disaster. Beyond their artistic value, these objects and buildings represent centuries of religious practice, craftsmanship, memory, and cultural identity for the communities surrounding them. Mandalay has long been one of Myanmar’s major Buddhist, artistic, and cultural centers. The city is particularly known for generations of craftspeople producing hand-carved Buddha images and other forms of traditional religious art. When an earthquake destroys a historic place, what is lost or damaged extends beyond architecture. It can affect a physical connection between generations. As restoration continues across the region, the preservation of these sites will form one part of a much larger and more difficult recovery for the people of Myanmar.
