@saint: Built between 1989 and 1991, the 98 metre steel pyramid opened as a 20,000 seat arena. Its form references the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis, the namesake of the Tennessee city beside the Mississippi River. After hosting concerts and the Memphis Grizzlies, the arena closed in 2004 and sat largely unused. Bass Pro Shops signed a 55 year lease in 2010, reopening the building in 2015 as a retail and entertainment complex with a hotel, bowling alley, restaurants, indoor swamp and observation deck. ¹ 99% Invisible, ‘From Folly to Megastore: Inside the Great American Pyramid of Memphis, Tennessee’, 2019 ² O.T.
