I'm confident he only found out after the elevator. He tried a real goodbye when he thought Chuuya had a chance of actually dying, but it was too painful. I think with his second "speech," he spoke more freely instead of stopping because he trusted Chuuya (and knew him well enough) to know he'd cut Dazai off so he wouldn't have to finish. (However, if he did intend to finish his speech, that's equally interesting to me.) Dazai's return to complaining about Chuuya reestablishes their usual dynamic, and conveys to Chuuya that he's now in on the act. Chuuya probably saw his speech as too theatrical and was irritated, but I don't think he would've made Dazai commit so severely to the act when it wasn't real. He takes the blame of Dazai's unfinished goodbye onto himself, and to me that represents a forgiveness for Dazai's earlier actions against him. Dazai's first goodbye ended cruelly, but Chuuya conveys through a simple interruption that he doesn't expect Dazai to make up for it, and he doesn't want to finish hearing an inauthentic farewell. Anyways I love them I could go on forever
